Edith was born in Hendon, Middlesex, and educated at the South Hampstead High School, and later the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London.

One of Edith's series of novels was about Chief Inspector MacDonald of Scotland Yard. The character appeared in 46 novels, with his assistant, Detective Inspector Reeves in 28. Edith published these under the nom de plume of ECR Lorac in 1931.

With a change of lead character, Edith used Carol Carnac nom de plume. Under this pseudonym Edith had 23 novels published, with Inspector Ryvet, a series character. The other two main characters were Chief Inspector Julian Rivers of Scotland Yard and his assistant, Inspector Lancing.

Edith had a sister in Lancaster, near to where she spent her final days in Aughton. The headstones in the row with hers are also Rivetts.
