Confederate soldiers who died in the Battle of New Bern and were buried where they fell. Their remains were later disinterred and reburied in Cedar Grove Cemetery by the Ladies Memorial Society.
The memorial placed in the cemetery, also provided by the Ladies Memorial Society, features a Confederate officer with cloak and sash. This is a reasonably old memorial, by Southern standards, having been dedicated in May 1885.
Note the typo in the inscription on the rear of the memorial spelling NEW BERN as NEWBERN.
