Both Mullan and the Mullan Road were named for John Mullan who was in charge of constructing a wagon road from Fort Benton, Montana to Fort Walla Walla, Washington.
Mullan started life as a mining town supporting two nearby silver mine and still continues to this day in support of one of the major silver producers in the country.
