Eric takes to scavenging bins trying to find antiques. Unfortunately he gets caught and warned off by bin men, led by Brian Nun. Lovejoy occasionally buys antiques from Brian, and buys the hat stand Eric had found and had confiscated by Brian.

Lovejoy is asked by Lady Jane to do a valuation for her friend Mrs Jaglom. Mrs Jaglom is on her uppers and needs to raise cash. Lovejoy does a valuation and sets off for a drink with Lady Jane. Unfortunately Lovejoy’s car breaks down and he gets soaked walking to Felsham Hall. Lady Jane lets Lovejoy sleep on the sofa whilst she dries his clothes.

During the night Mrs Jaglom is burgled and knocked out. The police call on Lovejoy and give him a hard time, particularly as he won’t reveal where he was when the burglary took place. Things get interesting when Brian Nun brings Lovejoy a pistol case which used to be Mrs Jaglom’s. Brian claims that he found it on the tip. Lovejoy buys the case and goes to the tip with Brian to see if he can find the pistols. Whilst he is out the police lean on Eric to find out where the case came from. Eric tells them about Brian and Brian is brought in for questioning.

Lovejoy decides to try and smoke the thieves out by holding a free antiques valuation. Two likely lads arrive with a rhino horn that used to be Mrs Jaglom’s property. Later one of the pair arrives at Lovejoy's wanting to sell the pistols for £1000. Eric uses his initiative and raises the money by selling one of Lovejoy’s chairs to a dealer. The chairs are worth considerably more than £1000. Lovejoy is not best pleased, but agrees to meet the pair, and has Brian on hand as back up.

Lovejoy meets the pair down a country lane. After he hands over the money Brian blocks their exit with his bin lorry and the pair are trapped inside the bin lorry and taken to the police. The retrieved pistols and their case are sold at auction for Mrs Jaglom, who is able to pay off her debts.
