"Olympia ist ein Heiligtum des Zeus und befindet sich im Nordwesten des Peloponnes. In der Antike fanden hier die Olympischen Spiele statt. In diesem Bereich befand sich bereits im Mittelhelladikum eine Siedlung, während auf eine mykenische Siedlung nur wenige einzelne Funde hinweisen. Entstanden ist die Kultstätte im 10. oder 9. Jahrhundert v. Chr. und wurde erst im 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. fertig gestellt. Der oströmische Kaiser Theodosius II ließ im Jahre 426 n. Chr. die immer noch hier stattfindenden Spiele und Weihhandlungen verbieten. So wollte er das Heldentum bekämpfen. Allerdings gingen die Spiele noch weit bis in das 6. Jahrhundert heimlich weiter, bis die Stätte durch ein Erdbeben zerstört und nicht wieder aufgebaut wurde. Im Jahre 1723 wollte der Kunstschriftsteller Bernard de Montfaucon Olympia ausgraben. 1766 war es Richard Chandler, der hier mit kleinen Grabungen begann und erst im Jahre 1768 war es Johann Joachim Winckelmann, der feste Pläne schmiedete, die Kultstätte auszugraben. Allerdings starb er, bevor er mit Grabungen anfangen konnte. In den nächsten Jahren folgten viele bedeutende Archäologen, die systematisch Messungen unternahmen und einen topografischen Lageplan aufstellten. Im Jahre 1829 war es dann endlich soweit und es wurden in nur zwei Monaten sehr große Teile des Zeustempels freigelegt. Deutsche Ausgrabungen in den Jahren 1875 bis 1881 legten weitere Bereiche der antiken Stätte frei. Alles, was man in der Ausgrabungsstätte fand, wurde in einem Museum am Rande der Ausgrabungsstätte untergebracht, dass eigens für diese Fundstücke gebaut wurde. Im Jahre 1936 nahm das Deutsche Archäologische Institut die Grabungen erneut auf und es wurde das Stadion freigelegt, restauriert und im Jahre 1961 neu eingeweiht. Im Jahre 2007 kam es in Griechenland zu schweren Waldbränden, bei denen der Baumbestand rund um die antike Stätte vernichtet wurde. Das Museum entging ebenfalls nur sehr knapp der Zerstörung.
