Hat Yai ("Hard Yai"), which translates as "Big Beach", is the largest city of southern Thailand, located in the Songkhla Province. The city is situated near the Malay border, has a population over 150,000, and sprawls along the main transportation routes connecting the Kingdom to the wider world. The city is economically prosperous, and is something of a tourist drawcard. Unusually, the city is not the provincial capital. The capital is the town of Songkhla, located ~20kms to the east, on the Gulf of Thailand.
Located near the amorphous city centre is the city government offices. The offices are one long, rectangular, multi-story building. The design is somewhat modern western, eschewing the traditional Thai style.
There is a measure of terrorism (bombs and shootings) present in Hat Yai, spilling over from the three Muslim provinces to the immediate south. Thus entry to the grounds and to the building is for business only.
