The Defenders of the Flag is a gray granite monument which has a 7.5' tall figure of a Union standard bearer standing on top of a 13' by 8' 8' base. The monument was fabricated by the McGovern Granite Company and dedicated on June 14, 1913.
The figure is wearing a cap, belted jacket and opened collar shirt. A canteen is slung by a strap over his right shoulder and rests against his left hip. He has his left arm around the colors which he holds at a 30 degree angle. His right hand is holding the flagpole which touches the ground near his right foot.
The front face of the base has relief sculptures of the insignia of the Grand Army of the Republic, crossed swords and laurel wreaths crossed rifles and, in raised letters, the inscription:
IN MEMORY
OF THE
DEFENDERS OF THE FLAG
and at the bottom of the base the dates
1861 * 1865
A single Civil War cannon is located to the rear of the monument.
