Fumerole Butte formed as a volcano about 900,000 years ago. It is a basaltic andesite shield volcano. The butte itself is a volcanic neck marking the vent of the volcano at the summit of the shield.

A USGS benchmark is on the top of Fumerole Butte, on the northern ring of the crater. In fact, the USGS Quad map is named after Fumerole Butte.

Fumerole Butte is situated at the north end of about a three mile dirt road that leaves Brush Wellman Road at about mile marker 25. The road is a bit sketchy with many areas of volcanic rock exposed. It can be reached by a 4-wheel drive vehicle, but use caution, especially after recent rain.
