In Walpole, off West Street, is the MBTA Commuter Rail Walpole Station, where a red painted wooden building is located that was previously used as a train station at this location.
The access is off West Street, by the West Street Railroad Bridge. The station is located at an 'X' track intersection. The MBTA station platform is on the NE-SW line to the north of the station, itself.
The structure is L-shaped, and wood-framed, with a square cupola at the corner. The shingled hip roof extends beyond the walls, providing shelter in rain. There is a white plaque with the year 1883.
An article in Wickedlocal.com has history on the building. The station was built in 1883. It originally had a 3-story tower, but that burned down in the 1890s. After that, the present two-story tower was built. It served the New York and New England Railroad and the Old Colony Railroad. Both of these lines were later combined into the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad. In 1973, the location was included on the Franklin line of the MBTA Commuter Rail system. It is not clear when the building was no longer used as a rail station. Currently, it looks empty.
The station is at an interesting location for watching trains. While I was there, a commuter rail train traveled from Boston (north) and stopped, then went toward Franklin (south). Meanwhile, a CSX freight train waited on the north side of the line, and, when the MBTA train cleared, the CSX train took one of the wye connectors and went northeast toward Boston.
The article stated that the station was included in a historical building survey to possibly be later included in the National Register of Historic Places.
