Grand Trunk Railway Station - Lakefield, ON - Train Stations/Depots on Waymarking.com

The Grand Trunk Railway operated throughout Central Ontario during the latter part of the 19th and early part of the 20th centuries.

The Lakefield station was built in 1891 to respond to the freight requirements of the nearby mills and as an alternative to almost total dependence on the Trent Severn waterway system to move goods. Passenger service was also offered. The station was built in the "Van Horne" style popular in that time period.

In time the Grand Trunk was absorbed in turn by Canadian Northern, then Canadian National Railways. VIA Rail assumed rersponsibility for almost all passenger service in the early 1970's.

The last passenger and freight trains passed through here in 1981, at which time the line was abandoned and the tracks removed.

Today there is an excellent "Rails to Trails" path outside the station. There has been some movement at restoring the facility. The foundation has recently been revamped. There is currently a book store occupying the old waiting area.
