The Logan Canyon Scenic Byway features hiking biking, geology, history, beautiful canyons (especially during the fall when the leaves turn), wildlife and bird watching, and a multitude of outdoor activities (hunting, fishing, skiing, horseback riding).

This waymark features the geological features from Rick's Cavern to Wind Cavern.

BEGIN: RICK'S CAVERN AND SPRING (N41.50.389 W111.35.347)
This cave is a karst formation, located at a wayside reststop alongside Hiway 89 in Logan Canyon, Utah. The cave has been named after Thomas Ricks, a colonel in the Mormon Miltia, who "discovered" the spring and cavern while searching for a route from Cache Valley to Bear Lake Valley in 1865. The spring is supplied from melting snow, with a maximum flow of 32,000 gallons per minute, but also dries up in the winter when snow is not melting. For years, pioneers would collect water from the spring to use as drinking water, until they realized it was causing stomach ailments and today we know the water is infected with giardia.

As you drive from Rick's Cavern toward Wind Cave, notice the geology alonge the hillsides.

WAYPOINT: WORM TRAILS: N41.46.815 N111.38.658
Park carefully alongside the small pulloff and exit your vehicle and notice the large boulder near the road that is covered by what appears to be seaweed. This large boulder (fuciodal quartzite) is a fossilized deposit left by ancient marine worms 400 million years ago.

END: Wind Cave Trailhead n41.45.729 W111.42.226
The Wind Caves can be accessed from the wayside stop along Highway 89. Interpretive signs provide a map of the trail that leads 5.3 miles up Logan Canyon to a delicate triple arch and natural cave in a limestone outcropping. The Caves are also known as the Witch's Castle. The information kiosk educates visitors about the bats found around the cave and rare plants in the canyon. The trail is well marked and easy to follow, but fairly steep. Return on the same trail (out and back).
