Although the model here shows this marine reptile with most of his body out of the water this would have been impossible for him to do! He would have spent his entire life under water, with only his head coming to the surface to breath. This is because he had such a heavy neck.
Just like modern day marine snakes the Elasmosaurus would have given birth to live young instead of laying eggs. This is because their flippers would have been useless on land so could not have come on to the beaches to lay eggs.
The first skeleton of this marine reptile was found in Kansas in 1867. The scientist who first put the bones together actually put the head in the tail instead of the neck.
