The foundation stone for St. Mary's Cathedral was laid in 1868. The cathedral was designed by William Wilkinson Wardell in a grand Gothic Revival style. The north section of the cathedral was completed in 1882. In 1900 the central tower was completed. The nave was was completed in 1928. The cathedral then remained uncompleted with cut off towers. The spires were added in accordance to Wardell's original plan in 2000 with the help of a government grant thus completing the grand cathedral.
