Railroads Build a Dam
The trail next to you was once part of a 62-mile railroad system. During the building of Hoover Dam, two railroads carrying construction materials and equipment connected here at Lawler Junction. Six Companies Inc Railroad hauled gravel across the Colorado River on a wooden trestle from an Arizona quarry to a screening plant, which now lies beneath Lake Mead. The US Government Railroad brought heavy equipment and structural steel from Boulder City.
Railroads need gentle grades to pull their heavy loads. Today some of the former Lake Mead railroad beds have been converted into gently sloping trails like the one you are on today.
