The community of Linkville was established in 1867 and the name was changed to Klamath Falls in 1893. The community was incorporated as the City of Klamath Falls in 1905. The Southern Pacific Railroad reached Klamath Falls in 1909 and this station was completed in 1916. Although the Union Pacific had acquired the Southern Pacific in 1901, the US Supreme Court in 1913 ordered the Union Pacific to sell all of its Southern Pacific stock. In 1927, the Cascade route over Willamette Pass was completed and passenger service was extended to Portland via Klamath Falls. Amtrak took over passenger service from Southern Pacific on May 1, 1971. In 1988, Rio Grand Industries took control of the Southern Pacific and in 1996, the Union Pacific again acquired the Southern Pacific.
The Amtrak Coast Starlight stops daily at the station (southbound and northbound). The station is staffed by an Amtrak employee providing ticketing and baggage services.
