Die Wehrkirche zu Holzweißig wurde um 1150 als einschiffige romanische Kapelle aus unbehauenen Feldsteinen erbaut. Die urkundliche Ersterwähnung des Ortes Holzweißig erfolgte dagegen erst im Jahre 1323. Damit ist die Kirche älter als der Ort.
Der Ortsname Holzweißig leitet sich von dem slawischen Wort - Visoka - die Höhe - ab. Im 17. Jahrhundert wurde die Kapelle durch den Anbau des Chores und des Turmes erweitert. Dieser Turm musste zwischen 1732 und 1776 wieder entfernt werden. Er wurde durch eine 8-eckige barocke Turmhaube ersetzt.
1702 erfolgte der Bau einer Leichenhalle, die jetzt als Sakristei dient. Vor der Reformation war die Wehrkirche wahrscheinlich den 14 Nothelfern geweiht. Von dem Altar der Spätgotik (14. Jahrhundert) sind die drei hölzernen Schnitzfiguren erhalten geblieben. Die Figuren stellen Maria in der Mitte, Aegidius auf der linken und Cyriacus auf der rechten Seite dar.
Das in der Kirche befindliche Taufbecken aus Messing ruht auf einem bemalten Fuß aus Sandstein. Im Boden der Taufschale befindet sich eine reliefartige Darstellung von Maria Verkündigung. Das Taufbecken ist wahrscheinlich älter als die eingravierte Jahreszahl 1702.
Die beiden Glocken sind aus verschiedenen Zeitepochen. Die große Glocke hat einen Durchmesser von 87 Zentimetern und ist eine der ältesten Glocken des Landkreises. Wahrscheinlich wurde sie in der 1. Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts gegossen. Die kleine Glocke ist ein Ersatzguss aus Stahl aus dem Jahre 1952.

English Description
The fortified church of Holzweissig was built around 1150 as a one-aisle, romanesque chapel made out of raw boulders. The first mention of the village of Holzweissig was found in a document dating back to the year 1323, thus, the church is older than the village.
The village`s name "Holzweissig" originates from the Slavonic word "Visoka" (meaning "height"). In the 17th century, the chapel was enlarged through the construction of the choir and the tower. The latter had to be removed between 1732 and 1776, and was replaced by an octagonal, baroque tower top.
The sacristy was originally built as a mortuary in 1702. Before the reformation, the altar was probably consecrated to the 14 Holy Helpers ("Nothelfer"). Of this original altar dating back to the late Gothic period (14th century), three wooden carved figures are preserved. The figures are showing Mary in the middle with Giles (or Aegidius) to her left and St. Cyriacus to her right. The brass basin is sitting on a painted sandstone base. At the bottom of the basin, a relief-like depiction of the Annunciation can be seen. The baptismal basin is probably older than the engraved year 1702.
The two bells are from different time periods. The bigger one has a diameter of 87 cm (34.5 inch) and is one of the oldest bells in the county. It was probably cast in the first half of the 13th century. The small bell substitutes a bell which was melted-down in World War II. It is made out of steel and was built in the year 1952.
