The marble has an inscription describing its reason for being here:

'This piece of marble from the bombed reredos
of St Paul's was given by the Dean and Chapter
to commemorate the presentation of Mary
The Mother by the St George's Players in the
Cathedral Crypt, 12th January 1952.'
