The first free library in Ravalli County was established in 1903 in a room in the local bank in Hamilton. In 1907, the library moved into the new city hall but the space quickly became inadequate and the community requested a grant from Andrew Carnegie. The community received $9,000 grant and Margaret Daly, the widow of copper king Marcus Daly, provided the property to build the library on in 1916. In 1988 and addition was built. The building is a contributing structure for the Hamilton Commercial Historic District which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on Sept 1, 1988.
