The little town of Epiphany, SD came to life between 1889 and 1892. In 1893, a Catholic priest and Medical doctor, Father William Kroeger, built a laboratory in the town. Here, he made medicine to cure diseases and also worked on a cure for skin cancer. He soon came to be known as "the great healer." People came from all over the United States and even from foreign countries to be treated for diseases by Dr. Kroeger. At one time, there were 300-400 people in Epiphany waiting to be treated or waiting to receive a diagnosis from Dr. Kroeger. Kroeger also had the first hand operated x-ray machine in South Dakota.

Dr. Kroeger did more for this little town than just practice medicine. He supplied this little town with its first electrical light plant, water works plant, and articifial ice plant. In 1903, Dr. Kroeger established the town's first paper, its first bank, and a factory for making paper boxes.

In 1899, Father Kroeger had to resign of his priestly duties so he could concentrate fully on his medical practice. However, when his health began to fail in 1904, Kroeger resigned from medicine and took up his position as a priest again. Dr./Father Kroeger died suddenly on 8 December 1904 at the age of 52. He is buried in the town's cemetery.
