"A spectre is haunting Europe"
A bust of Karl Marx (1818-1883) is perhaps something not to be surprised at in China—then again, considering recent economic changes, perhaps it is.
Karl Marx was born in Prussia, lived and travelled over most of Europe, and died, while in exile, in London. He is known for the development of the political and economic system of communism, of which he, along with his colleague Friedrich Engels, were the two prominent figures. Marx's ideas found expression in the pamphlet "Communist Manifesto" (1848), while the full range of his Marxist though was presented in "Kapital" (1894), co-authored with Engels. His ideas, in one form or another, were to find a home in many countries in the 20th century.
In the southern Chinese city of Guangdong is to be found the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. This is one of the more accomplished universities in the city. Near the centre of the university is a group of busts and statues of important scientific and cultural figures. One of these is a bust of Karl Marx. The bust is several times larger than life-sized, brown in colour, and looks to have been carved from stone. It sits at about head high on a dark coloured plinth. On the plinth in Mandarin and English is the name "Karl Marx" and his year of birth and death.
