The card commemorates the 100th anniversary of Stanford University whose official name is Leland Stanford Jr. University. Leland and Jane Stanford established this university in memory of their son, Leland Jr., who had died of typhoid fever at the tender age of 15.
Famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted designed the layout of the campus as a series of quadrangles. The entrance to the Main Quadrangle leads to the Memorial Court which lies opposite of the Memorial Church. This entrance was once adorned by the Memorial Arch which stood 100 ft. high and was decorated with ornate friezes all around. But it was severely damaged by the 1906 earthquake and was never rebuilt. The bases were reduced to the height of the adjacent arcades and capped with red tiles. One can be seen in the view on the stamp.
