"ROME, 115 m. (3,381 alt., 100 pop.), (service station, store), was
named for imposing and fantastic formations of fossil-bearing clay, called the "Walls of Rome," which are southeast of the village. They are about five miles long and two miles wide, and rise to a height of 100 feet. Gloomy ravines penetrate the mounds and buttes. Among the most interesting of the formations are great solitary clay blocks that appear to have been shaped by the chisel of a giant sculptor. At dusk these mesas are weird and sinister in appearance, and moonlight dusts their symmetrical contours with an uncanny splendor." -Oregon: End of the Trail, 1940
Today, Rome contains the same store an small airstrip described in decades past. The nearby "Pillars of Rome" are an interesting geological site that can be enjoyed by visitors to this remote section of the state.
