While there are many Prairie homes, the Winslow house is unique in the development of Wright's design concepts he would use during his long career and its Sullivanesque ornamentation. These concepts include the foundation that ties the house to the site, the prominence of the first floor living space over the second floor and the hipped roof that seemingly floats above. Also unique is the extreme symmetry of the front of the house including a pair of urns set on blocks and the arrangement of the windows, door and large central chimney. The original design even calls for an octagonal pavillion on the south side of the house to balance the porte-cochere on the north, but it was never built.
The adjacent stable provided space for Winslow's hobby-- a press for publishing non-commercial books in tasteful limited editions. In 1896, Winslow and Wright collaborated on a book by a Unitarian minister that espoused many of Wright ideas about domestic life and architecture and The House Beautiful is now a valuable collector's item.
The Winslow house is one of the 17 structures by Wright designated for preservation by the American Institute of Architects.
The Winslow house continues to be a private residence. Please do not disturb.
