This large fountain in the square has four separate sculptures around its edge representing various parts of the local culture.

‘t Zand is the largest public square in Bruges. It is situated where the old railway station used to be. It is used as an open air market at weekends and as a venue as an open air concert site.
In the middle of the square is this large fountain with 4 separate sculptures by the husband and wife sculptors Stefaan De Puydt and Livia Canestraro.
The fountain has a central pool with large jets, and the 4 sculptures are situated around its edge.
When the square is in use a market or concert area, the jets in the fountain are turned down low. This avoids getting the market stalls and passersby wet, especially in windy weather. The fountain acts as a focal point and many people stop to look at it, and is an especial favourite with kids.
The fountain however is at its most dramatic and interesting when the main jets are turned up high.
The 4 elements of the sculpture are as follows.
1. A mermaid reclining on a polder which is used on the coast to reclaim land from the sea.
2. A group of cyclists representing the local culture. Amongst the cyclists are Nele and Till Eulenspiegel, characters from local folklore.
3. Fishermen from the nearby port of Zeebrugge.
4. Four bathing ladies representing Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent and Kotriejk, the four main cities of the region.
