This building is rather angular and simple amidst all the other classic government buildings and art in the Civic Center area of Denver. Who knew this was such an important piece of architecture?

"The 1949 classroom building is an important post World War II example of the International Style. The stair towers, the horizontally ribboned windows and the use of the cantilever are all distinctive characteristics of the style. Denver architects Casper Hegner, Thomas Moore, and Dudley Smith designed the building which was originally used as a Civic Center campus for the University of Denver. The City and County later converted the building into city offices. In 2001-2002 the city constructed a multi-story addition to the northwest elevation. Denver architectural firms David Owen Tryba Architects and RNL collaborated on the design." (from (

"This building is an addition to Annex One, the 1948-1949 landmark International Style building that originally housed classrooms for the University of Denver before being occupied by municipal offices.
Annex One was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 after standing only 41 years. It was fully renovated with construction of the new Wellington Webb Municipal Building." (from (

"One of the buildings featured in 'Denver: The Modern City' is the D.U. Civic Center Classroom Building, now known as City and County Annex I, at 1445 Cleveland Place. The State Historical Fund provided a $12,000 grant to the City and County of Denver for the preparation of a Historic Structure Assessment of that International Style building in 1999. The final report, prepared by the architectural firm of Slater Paull & Associates, Inc., states that the building was constructed in 1948-49 as a classroom for the University of Denver School of Commerce, was leased to the City and County of Denver in 1968, and was ultimately acquired by Denver in 1971. Plans are currently underway for an addition to this important historic building, which are intended to compliment rather than to upstage what has been referred to by authors Tom Noel and Barbara Norgren as Denver's best example of International Style architecture."
