This is a difficult subject, but after some thought I decided that the man concerned should be commemorated. Also, as he is notable for an historic act, rather than for his Buddhism in itself, I decided that this statue should be entered into the "Statues of Historic Figures" category, rather than a religious category.

Thich Quang Duc (1897–1963), was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who burned himself to death in central Saigon on the 11th June 1963. He did this in protest against the persecution of Buddhist monks and Buddhism by the Catholic, USA supported president of South Vietnam, Ngo Dinh Diem. Following his death, Thich Quang Duc, was deemed to be a Buddhist saint, a bodhisattva, and is recognised as such in Vietnam.


This statue depicts Thich Quang Duc seated in the lotus position, wearing Buddhist robes, somewhat larger than life-size—the position he assumed for his self-immolation. Behind him are symbolic flames leaping upwards. The statue seems to be made of stone. The statue rests on a plinth, which has Thich Quang Duc's name and birth and death year. The statue has the attributes of a Buddhist shrine. Behind the statue are high-relief images of the war. The statue is located at the traffic intersection where Thich Quang Duc died. There are two biographical plaques before the statue, in English and Vietnamese. Unfortunately, I could not obtain a good photograph of the English.
