The water tower at the Alston station of the South Tynedale Railway was rebuilt in 2010. Constructed of welded steel sheet, it is used to re-water the steam engines running on the railway and has been placed on a stone-built building on the short platform adjacent to the run-round loop. The water flow to the engine is controlled from ground level using a chain-operated valve placed in the 5cm supply pipe. A separate chain to the valve can be 'locked down' to prevent accidental operation of the valve and loss of water.
