This was the third step in turning prairie grass into a grain field.

The second step, after turning the soil with a plow, was waiting for the sod to die in the turned soil. Otherwise, it would simply regrow.

After the first two steps, the field would be tilled with an implement such as this to break up the sod and the soil and to smooth the field somewhat. A really inventive farmer would find further uses for the implement, as well.

In an emergency, such as lack of a seeder, a farmer could broadcast seed by hand, then run the disc over the field to cover the seed. Another ingenious use was to run the disc down the field, creating a furrow between the two halves of the gang, plant a crop such as potatoes in the furrow, then reverse the two gangs and run over the field again, filling in the furrow.

No name plates or casting marks could be found, so manufacturer is unknown.
