This is a large and impressive museum located near the city centre of Hanoi. The building itself was designed as a blend of Indochinese and French architecture. Over the course of its history it has been the French consulate and the residence of the governor general. The structure has been rebuilt and restored several times.
The history on display concentrates more on the distant past. The ground floor traces Vietnam's history from the Neolithic to the 15th century. The second floor continues from the 15th to the 20th century. The museum contains a host of artefacts from the various periods, plus diorama, and displays. Everything is well documented in English. There are a number of iconic artefacts from Vietnam's long history. The museum has a small gift shop in the museum. Guided tours can be arranged with the staff.
Entry is ~$2 for adults, plus and extra charge for use of a camera ($1.50)
