"17. MILES LINEN MILL (open 9-5 weekdays), 2150 Fairgrounds
Rd., manufactures salmon twine, fish nets, sack twine, shoe
thread, and linen yarns from Oregon flax." -Oregon: End of the Trail, 1940
Visitors to this site are not afforded any clues about the rich history of this property. This was the location of Miles Linen Mill, established in 1925 as a manufacturer of materials that used fiber flax. In 1940, at the time "Oregon: End of the Trail" was published, the mill was one of the leading industries in Salem, according to the 1940-41 Salem City Directory. The mill continued to operate until about 1950. The Oregon National Guard took over the building and in the 1990s, the structure was torn down to make way for a Rite-Aid store, although that never materialized and the site remained vacant for several years until about 2010 when the Walgreens store opened at this location.
