Long Description:

Iyo Stone in tribute Philip Englehart, the FIRST President Japanese Garden Society of Oregon 1963-1964, is located in Portland’s Japanese Garden.

Portland’s Japanese Garden, located in Portland's West Hills, opened in 1963 as a symbol of the friendship between Portland and its first sister city, Sapporo, Japan. The Garden is said to be the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan.

This 5.5-acre garden includes a teahouse, five distinct garden styles--tea (roji), strolling pond (chisen-kaiyu-shiki), natural (shukei-en), sand and stone karesansui/zen niwa), and flat (hira-niwa), and commanding views of the city and Mount Hood (it can stand in for Mt. Fuji). It was designed by Professor Takuma.

The coordinates are the entrance gate. There is a free shuttle up the hill to the entrance gate, running about every 15 minutes, except in winter, when it operates less frequently. You can also choose to walk through the Antique Gate and up an interesting pathway on the south side of the road. Or ride up and walk down the pathway.

Japanese Garden Hours: October-March 10-4; April-September 10-7. Mondays Open 12:00P all year. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Instructions for logging waymark: A photograph is required of front of Entrance Gate with you and/or your GPSr in the picture. If you visit the Japanese Garden, take a photograph instead of the Iyo Stone with you and/or your GPSr in the picture.
