When you are at Riverside Park, you cannot miss this mural. The first thing that catches your eye is the vivid colors that peaks one’s curiosity.
Upon closer inspection, you notice the mural covers two large sections of the underside of the Nelson Bridge. On both sections of the wall is a vivid representation of Nelson’s abundant wildlife in the surrounding area.
You see a large trout leaping out of the Columbia River to nab that dragonfly. There is a large white bear keeping a watchful eye on the bench provided for passersby.
The whimsical snail in the lower right corner is no doubt wondering, "who'd dat?" There is even a small gray mouse scampering up the wall to safety on the upper left corner near the on-ramp to the bridge.
The splashes of browns, yellows and reds representing trees and a cross section log showing rings to find the age of the tree. The colorful reds, greens, yellows, purples and blues swirls leaves you with a feeling of motion and you are taken in by its grandeur.
We walked away knowing that we had just stood witness to a great mural: accomplished by the use of cans of spray paint, offered by the artful hands of local youths.
The “Colours of Nelson” was artistically done by local youth from the area. With spray cans in hand they set out the task of beautifying the underside of Nelson Bridge. This is a new addition and plans are to continue the project into other local area locations.
This project was co-sponsored by the Nelson and District Arts Council, Nelson City Police, the Rotary Daybreak Club, Nelson and District Youth Centre, Nelson City Hall and the Department of Highways/Ministry of Transportation.
We were at the park, and we could not help but notice this brightly colored mural. It is impressive, and if you are in the area this is well worth seeing.
