"Two pairs of somewhat abstract figures face each other. One pair are two academics, a man and a woman, wearing caps and gowns. The man holds a book at chest level with both hands and the woman holds a branch in front of her. They face two townspeople wearing long dresses, capes, and hats. One has a purse on her proper left arm and the other holds an umbrella at her waist, with the tip resting on the ground." -Smithsonian Art Inventory Catalogue
