This milestone was placed here by the Alston Turnpike Trust in the early C19th. It is a single stone approximately 4ft high by 2ft with an elliptical top. It is Grade II listed. It has most probably been moved to its present location, set into a retaining wall to the west of the Town Hall with only its face showing, from very near by when the area was landscaped. It is painted white with carved sans-serif lettering picked out in black.

The legend reads:

            ALSTON
              TO
                  MILES
     HEXHAM 23½
