The Victory Oak Tree was planted in Evansville, IN to commemorate the victory of the first World War for the US. Near the base of the tree, a small plaque was placed to honor the first of the city's fallen soldiers from the war, Pvt. Douglas Viele.

The plaque that was erected reads:

"To the Memory of Douglas Viele,
the First Evansville Soldier who Died
in the Service of His Country
in the Great War. July 7th, 1917
born April 21st, 1891."

The tree and whats left of the plaque stands on the grounds of Rathbone Retirement Home on SE 2nd St in downtown Evansville.
