[English]
This statue is known as the Childrens Statue of Lafayette. It was designed by the sculptor, Paul Wayland Barlett. It was a gift to France in 1908, from five million American school children, at the request of the Daughters of the American Revolution. It was unveiled on July 4, 1900 in connection with the Paris Exposition and was originally erected in the Place du Carrousel at the Louvre. It was later relocated to its current location when the modern pyramid of steel and glass was added to the Louvre. It is now located on the right bank of the Seine, along the Cours Albert 1er, between the Pont Alexandre III and the Pont des Invalids. An identical statue was placed at Metz by the Knights of Columbus in 1920. Another copy of the statue was erected in Hartford, Connecticut in 1932.
The bronze statue depicts Lafayette on horseback, with the horses right leg raised. Lafayette is in military uniform, including a long overcoat. His left hand is holding the reigns while his right hand is raised, holding a sword skyward. The statue itself, appears to be double life-size. It is situated atop a large white marbel plinth, with ornate columns and frieze art. Etched into the massive plinth, in English, is the following:
ERECTED
BY THE
SCHOOL CHILDREN
OF THE
UNITED STATES
IN
GRATEFUL MEMORY
OF
LAFAYETTE
STATESMAN
SOLDIER
PATRIOT
Below that, near the base of the plinth is written, again in English:
THIS STONE IS A TRIBUTE TO THE NATIONAL SOCIETY
OF THE DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
TO THE ILLUSTRIOUS MEMORY OF LAFAYETTE
THE FRIEND OF AMERICA
THE FELLOW SOLDIER OF WASHINGTON
THE PATRIOT OF TWO COUNTRIES
In the bottom right corner of the plinth, it states:
PAUL W. BARTLETT - SCULP
THOMAS HASTINGS - ARCH
"In the American Revolution, Lafayette served as a major-general in the Continental Army under George Washington. Wounded during the Battle of Brandywine, he still managed to organize a successful retreat. He served with distinction in the Battle of Rhode Island. In the middle of the war, he returned to France to negotiate an increase in French support. On his return, he blocked troops led by Cornwallis at Yorktown while the armies of Washington and those sent by King Louis XVI under the command of General de Rochambeau, Admiral de Grasse, and Admiral de Latouche Tréville prepared for battle against the British."
