Salmo is located in the Salmo River Valley, surrounded by the Selkirk Mountain range.
Salmo is well known for their stone murals celebrating the history and natural beauty of the area. The murals are very well done and the residents take pride in their beauty. Hence the town's motto displayed on their welcome sign.
You can take a short walking tour around Salmo and visit these unique works of art. You can pick up a guide at the visitor's center.
A little history: Originally known as Salmon Siding (original name of the Salmo River), the village was founded as a small mining town near the Nelson and Fort Sheppard Railway during a gold rush in 1896. It is a quiet community with great outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, and skiing.
We return to Salmo often to look for local surveyor benchmarks and of course geocaches that can be found along Hwy. 3 and in and around Salmo.
