Moss Landing (originally just Moss) was named after Charles Moss who built a wharf in the late 19th century to service the Pacific whaling fleet. The Moss Landing harbor is a favorite place to observe sea otters and sea lions.
The most notable landmark in Moss Landing is the gigantic Fynergy natural gas power plant, visible for miles up and down the coastline of Monterey Bay on a clear day.
