The City of Elgin created Veteran's Memorial park in 1930. It started with a static display of artillery dedicated to the local veterans of WWI. Over the ensuing decades, many features have been added to the park. Concrete benches appeared in the 1940s, a gazebo was built, and in 2007 a new sign and flagpoles went up. The park is now also used as a center for events downtown, such as movie nights and farmer's markets.
