Frederick Strause was born in 1833 in Germany.Came to the United States and immigrated to northern Indiana probably residing Fort Wayne,Angola or Auburn. Advertisements in the newspapers in 1854 declared that the railroad would go through Ligonier,IN and a station would be built there. The valley attracted Mr.Straus,he opened a small general store. In 1860 he brought his brothers Mathias and Jacob from Germany.As years went by the family branched out into other business's. They manufactured buggies and founded the Citizens Bank. Straus family farms developed into the biggest real estate business this side of the Mississippi. Jacob Straus built the White House at 210 Main St in 1898, which is now on the National Resigser. Frederick Straus died in 1890.
The mural depicts a picture of Frederick, his Ligonier Carriage Company and a picture of the Buggies/carriages his company built.
