I've been "hunting treasure" for years, long before I'd even ever picked up a gpsr, I was out and about with a metal detector. In my younger years I'd found lots of coins and jewellery beachcombing, but my biggest score was a bunch of tokens from 1813 in Prescott (that turned out to be not nearly as worth as much as I'd hoped). So the other day when I was at Blockhouse Island I noticed a guy with a detector out looking around. I'd asked him if he found much, he said that the ground was really hard and the grass was sparse due to the hot summer, which made finding "lost" items difficult. He told me that he's found quite and bit in the area from loose change to jewellery. Well that was good enough for me, so the kids and I decided to go to Blockhouse ourselves and give it a rip.
Now Blockhouse Island isn't really an island, but it once was. You can now drive out to it and enjoy and most splendid view of the St Lawrence River. Perhaps, I'd dare say, the best public view around the area. That being said, there are thousands of tourists that come by here in the summer months and "things" do get lost. Well the kids and I weren't real lucky today on our ventures, only finding 19 cents in change. We had a ton of solid hits, but digging up the sod here wouldn't be cool. So we just went for surface finds. In any event though, this place would be a pretty sweet place to find some treasures when it wasn't so busy (it was Labor Day long weekend). So bring your metal detector and some enthusiasm and you never know what you'll find that some kind tourist was unfortunate enough to leave. I would suggest though, that if you find anything of real value to drop it off at the tourist bureau office first. If it isn't claimed in a reasonable amount of time, it's yours. I'd really hate to see someone loose their wedding ring or a priceless family heirloom and not have it returned.
Oh yes and as a bonus there are also a ton of waymarks and a few geocaches here, plus Don's Fish and Chips one block over. Who could ask for anything more.
Cheers
CZ
