On Boston's Deer Island is a park area where you can walk completely around the peninsula and the modern sewage treatment plant. On the north end of the plant, there is a path that goes uphill by the watertank. On the right side is a spur that leads to a stone bench and a sign. The sign and the bench mark the location of New Rest Haven, an otherwise unmarked cemetery where remains have been relocated.
The sign at the location says the following:
"Deer Island Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area Maintained by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority
Prisons, hospitals, a reform school, a fort, and other facilities have been located at various times on Deer Island. As a result, many people died of illnesses while they were here. For many years, Deer Island had two cemeteries. One was for prisoners and hospital patients. The other was for military personnel, including Confederate officers who had been imprisoned on the islands. Before Fort Dawes was constructed during World War II, sone remains were moved to Fort Devens on the mainland. The other graves were relocated here at the New Rest Haven Cemetery."
There were no headstones that I saw here. Only the bench with the name "Resthaven" and the sign are here to mark them. Neither is there anything like hedges or fencing that mark the extent of the cemetery. Neither is there an indication on site how many graves are here. The National Park web site for Deer Island states that over 800 graves are here.
