Trio of Wind Turbines at Deer Island - Boston, MA - Windmills on Waymarking.com

On Boston's Deer Island is the Deer Island Sewage Treatment facility, which currently has three wind turbines as part of an effort to generate electricity on the premises to run the facility.

Deer Island, now a peninsula, is the location of both the sewage treatment facility for most of Greater Boston, and a walking area that is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Park and Recreational Area. You can access this location by car via the town of Winthrop (use a map - too hard to direct here), or by passenger ferry boat(there is a cost here). There is no admission fee, and you are allowed to walk totally around the facility - just stay on the outside of the fence if you aren't authorized to enter the gate. That's OK, you can get plenty close to them, anyway. There are signs along the path that explain the various energy generation installations visible. There is a museum on site about the Deer Island facility - you need to call ahead to make a reservation (not necessary).

A pair of traditional blade turbines are located on the southwestern side of the facility. The web site states that the two "600kW wind turbines (190 ft) were installed and commissioned on Deer Island in November 2009. The wind turbines generate over 2M kWh per year for an annual estimated savings of $200,000. "

About the third turbine, located northeast of the facility, "in 2011 an engineering prototype 100kW wind turbine, developed by a MA company, was installed on Deer Island. The FloDesign Wind turbine projects higher efficiency than traditional wind turbines. Engineering optimization of the design and operation of this turbine continues."
