This sundial quilt block was designed by Bob Hampton, astronomer and Martin Weaver, artist. It is a scientifically correct sundial showing local solar time standard time and daylght savings time on three hour scales. The equation of time correction is clearly shown in the profile of the moutains at the bottom of the pattern.
Your Visit:
This sundial quilt was on the sundial tour for the North American Sundial Society (www.sundials.org). We held our annual conference in Asheville NC and came to Burnsville to see this sundial. We were welcomed by the Mayor, Danny McIntosh who closed the road so our group could safely view the quilt block sundial. Bob Hampton and Martin Weaver explained the interesting details of the sundial quilt. Barbara Weaver told us of the Quilt Block Trail of Western North Carolina. We were impressed by the initiative, civic pride and cooperative spirit of the people in the hills of Western North Carolina preserving and extending this folk art.
