The Chesapeake Bay Bridge - Tunnel Authority operates a large paved parking lot near the toll booth at the end of the 24-mile long bridge and engineering wonder. This parking area is accessible from the north prior by the toll booth and before paying the 2012 toll of $12 per car ($20 for a SUV and a 2-axle camper). If planning a return trip across the bridge within 24-hours, be sure to save your toll booth receipt so the return toll will only cost $5!
This parking lot is a great place to turn off your propane tanks before going south on the bridge toward the Hampton Roads area (or to turn them back on after crossing the bridge northbound to the Eastern Shore).
Motorists are permitted to park up to 48 hours, according to signs posted around the lot. It should be noted that truckers use this lot to take a break and often idle their rigs during their stay, so choose a space closer to the visitor center and consider ear plugs if you are a light sleeper! The visitor center offers brochures and information pertaining to the Eastern Shore, snack machines and clean, heated/ air conditioned restrooms. There are a couple of picnic tables and a pet excersize area. Chesapeake Bay Bridge - Tunnel Police Officers regularly patrol the parking lot to ensure everyone is safe.
A beautiful hiking path connects the east side of the lot to the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge area, visitor center, butterfly trail, pioneer cemetery and an old military fort now managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. During the wet seasons, bring mosquito spray. This trail is perfect for letting children and adults blow-off a little steam after being cooped-up in the RV or other vehicle for several hours!
