The province of Udon Thani lies in the north of the Kingdom. Towards the centre of the capital is the provincial museum. This is housed in an impressive early 20th century building that was original a Royally sponsored girl's school. The building is set in an attractive, large open and grassed area, and has an associated Fine Arts Department (responsible for archaeological research) office on site.
The museum contains an interesting and well presented account of the history and background of the province. This is given through information plaques, diorama, old photographs, and original artefacts. The province contains the important archaeological remains of an earlier culture that independently developed agriculture in the region. This site has been World Heritage listed.
The museum has two floors. The lower deals with archaeology, the upper with the historical period. Entry is by donation (the first such I have seen in Thailand—100 baht would be a reasonable donations to make). There is a small (two shelves) range of t-shirts and souvenirs for sale. The museum has a limited photography policy.
