Basildon Park is an impressive 18th century Georgian house that fell into extreme disrepair in the first half of the 20th century while being occupied by the military and the Ministry of works - there was a fire which brought down some ceilings, then the lead was stripped from the roof leaving it open the the weather.
In the 1950s onwards Lady Iliffe bought the ruin and restored it very sympathetically.
