The Italian-inspired Crawford County Courthouse, constructed in 1842, is believed to be one of the oldest active courthouses west of the Mississippi. After an arson fire gutted the interior in 1877, alterations and additions were made, one of which was the Seth Thomas clock tower. There are several exhibits and monuments to early education in Crawford County as well as a Confederate memorial on the lawn of the courthouse. The Butterfield Stage Route passed directly in front of the courthouse.
On Sept 13, 2011 a gunman opened fire inside the courthouse, wounding the secretary of a judge, then engaged in a gun battle with police officers before being fatally wounded on the courthouse lawn.
