Sir Mackenzie Bowell, PC, KCMG 27 Dec 1823 – 10 Dec 1917) was a Canadian politician who served as the fifth Prime Minister of Canada from December 21, 1894 to April 27, 1896.
Sir Mackenzie was born in England but emigrated to Belleville in 1832 with his family. He apprenticed with the Belleville Intelligencer, before moving into politics in 1867. He was a member of the Conservative Party, and served in a variety of positions within the party.
In 1894 Prime Minister John Thompson died suddenly, and Sir Mackenzie was selected to be Prime Minister, even though he was sitting in the Senate at the time, rather than the House of Commons.
Bowell led the Government during the Manitoba Schools Question which would have forced Manitoba to reinstate its recently discontinued Catholic School program. Dissention in the House and within his own party, combined with him not having a seat in the House brought the everyday business of governing to a standstill. Members of his own party labeled him incompetent and sought his removal. However, Sir Charles Tupper returned from overseas, and Sir Mackenzie resigned, turning the position of PM over to Sir Charles.
Sir Mackenzie continued to serve as a Senator until his death in 1917.
