This station is the only functioning train station in the nation of Laos. It lies just over the border from Thailand, reached by crossing from the train station of the Thai city of Nong Khai, over the "Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge" to this station. In design fairly strait-forward. A long rectangular building running along the track.
As this is also an international checkpoint movement is restricted. One exits the train from Thailand, acquires the appropriate visa application documents, completes this myriad paperwork, hands the papers back along with money, waits, and then walks away with another page done away with in your passport. I am not certain, but I suspect the station is not open to casual visits.
The station is a little out of the way. Maybe 10kms from Vientiane city. A bus ride from here will set you back $3 or so. There are also a number of very expensive bus services to other parts of Laos. I suggest travelling to Vientiane to book your onwards journey. I realise that on google maps as at this date, the station is referred to as "Dongphosy", however, "Thanaleng" is the named used at the station. My range of photos was restricted due to the border crossing nature of the station.
